A rain barrel overflow hose directs excess water away from the foundation and keeps the barrel from tipping or washing out nearby soil. Inspect it after a storm when the actual flow path is easiest to see.
Watch the overflow
Observe the barrel during or soon after rain from stable ground. Look for leaks at the inlet, water rising around the base, or discharge pooling beside the house.
Clear the screen and outlet
Remove leaves from the lid screen and verify that the overflow opening is unobstructed. Keep hands away from moving water and do not climb on the barrel.
Secure the hose
Keep the extension connected, sloping away, and supported so it does not kink. Direct the outlet toward a stable area or approved drainage point, away from foundations and walkways.
Recheck the barrel after severe weather and before the next rainy season.
