Soil left on a garden cart holds moisture against the frame, adds weight, and can make a wheel or axle harder to inspect. Cleaning it before storage is quick when dry soil is brushed away first and water is kept away from bearings and protected parts.
Empty and stabilize
Unload the cart on firm ground and set the handle so it cannot roll. Wear gloves and eye protection if the soil is dry and dusty. Check the tub for cracks and the frame for bent supports before starting the wash.
Brush away dry soil
Use a stiff brush to remove soil from the tub, wheel tread, axle area, and frame corners. Break up packed clumps with a wooden stick rather than a sharp object that can damage the finish. Keep the loosened soil out of storm drains.
Rinse selectively
Use a gentle hose stream on the tub and tread, avoiding direct water into bearings, grease points, or electrical parts if the cart has any. Scrub stubborn residue with mild soap and rinse it away without flooding the axle.
Dry and store
Tip the cart so water drains, wipe metal surfaces, and let it air-dry fully. Lubricate moving points only with the product recommended for the cart. Store it under cover with the wheel supported and check the tires before the next heavy load.
