Plant sap can make hedge trimmer blades drag, collect debris, and corrode when the tool is stored damp. Cleaning should begin only after the power source is disconnected and the blades cannot start unexpectedly.
Make the tool safe
Switch off the trimmer, unplug it or remove the battery, and engage any blade lock. Wear gloves and keep fingers away from the cutting teeth. For a petrol model, follow the manufacturer’s instructions before handling the blade.
Brush away debris
Use a stiff nylon brush to remove leaves and loose material. Do not scrape aggressively with a screwdriver, which can nick the blade or damage the guard. Work from the body of the tool toward the blade tip.
Loosen the sap
Apply a cleaner approved for the tool finish to a cloth or brush rather than flooding the motor housing. Wipe short sections until the sticky film releases, then dry the metal thoroughly.
Protect and store
Apply a light manufacturer-approved protective oil and cycle the blade only when the tool is safe and disconnected. Fit the blade cover and store the trimmer dry. Have a damaged or badly misaligned blade serviced before use.
