How to Prune a Dead Branch from a Young Blueberry Bush

Removing a dead blueberry branch improves visibility and reduces a place for pests and decay to linger. Make the cut carefully so healthy bark and nearby buds remain undamaged.

Confirm the branch is dead

Scratch a small spot with a clean fingernail. Green tissue under the bark suggests life, while dry brown tissue throughout the branch indicates it can be removed.

Choose the cut

Cut just outside the branch collar or at a healthy lateral branch. Do not leave a long stub, and do not cut flush into the trunk.

Use clean pruners

Wipe bypass pruners before and after the cut. Make one smooth cut if possible, and avoid tearing the bark.

Observe recovery

Water normally and watch for new stress. Remove only clearly dead or damaged wood during a routine inspection.
