Fallen leaves can protect soil, but a thick wet layer may smother small plants and trap disease. Clearing a raised bed is a chance to protect healthy growth while returning useful organic matter in a controlled way.
Sort before removing
Lift leaves from tender plants, seedlings, and crowns. Separate clean dry leaves from material showing disease or pest damage.
Protect the soil surface
Use a hand rake or gloved hands to avoid disturbing shallow roots. Leave a thin clean layer where it will not cover the crown.
Compost suitable leaves
Shred clean leaves and mix them into compost or use them as a light mulch. Discard diseased material according to local guidance.
Prepare for winter
Check supports, drainage, and labels after clearing. A tidy bed is easier to inspect during cold weather.
