A pepper plant needs steady moisture, but a constantly saturated root zone can be as damaging as drought. Adjusting the emitter starts with observing the soil and confirming where water is actually landing.
Check the root zone
Push a finger into the soil several inches from the stem. The surface may look dry while the root zone remains wet, or water may be running away from compacted soil. Check more than one plant before changing the whole line.
Position the emitter correctly
Place the emitter near the developing root zone but not against the stem. As the plant grows, move or add an emitter so the wetted area expands without forming a puddle.
Make small adjustments
Turn adjustable emitters gradually, then run the system long enough to observe the result. Repair kinked tubing and flush clogged emitters instead of compensating by running the system much longer.
Recheck in changing weather
Heat, wind, mulch, soil type, and rainfall change the watering need. Inspect the soil after a hot day and after rain, and change the schedule in small steps.
