Moss on a brick walkway makes the surface slippery and hides uneven joints. Removing it with a stiff brush and correcting damp conditions provides a longer-lasting improvement than simply covering the growth.
Choose safe conditions
Work when the walkway is damp but not flooded, wear gloves with good grip, and keep the route closed to foot traffic. Avoid mixing cleaners or allowing runoff to reach sensitive plants.
Brush the surface
Use a stiff nylon brush along the brick faces and joints. Scrape gently around old mortar and stop if bricks crumble or joints begin to wash out. Collect the loosened moss rather than sweeping it into a drain.
Improve drainage
Trim plants that shade the path, redirect roof runoff, and refill joints with compatible material if water has removed it. Let the walkway dry before deciding whether a labeled masonry cleaner is necessary.
Regular sweeping and better sunlight help prevent moss from returning quickly.
