Mulch reduces evaporation but can hide soil that is either dry or saturated. Checking beneath the surface helps set a watering schedule based on the root zone instead of appearance alone.
Move mulch aside
Clear a small spot near the shrub’s outer root zone, not directly against the stem. Look for compacted soil, standing water, or dry dust.
Test below the surface
Push a finger or narrow trowel several inches into the soil. Compare two or three locations because one wet patch may not represent the whole bed.
Water slowly when needed
Apply water near the root zone at a slow rate so it soaks in rather than running over the mulch. Recheck after watering.
Keep mulch clear of stems
Maintain a small gap around the trunk or stems. Thick mulch against bark can hold moisture and encourage decay.
