A rain barrel needs a clear overflow path so excess water moves away from walls, foundations, and slippery walkways. Inspecting after rainfall reveals problems that are easy to miss when everything is dry.
Look for standing water
Trace the overflow outlet and observe where water collected. Puddles beside the foundation or erosion channels indicate that the discharge route needs adjustment.
Clear the diverter
Remove leaves and sediment from the inlet screen and diverter. Keep the barrel lid secure so mosquitoes and debris cannot enter.
Redirect safely
Use a sound extension or splash block to carry water to a stable, planted area that slopes away from the home. Make sure the outlet cannot undermine a path.
Recheck before the next storm
After drying, confirm the barrel is stable and the hose connections are tight. Seasonal leaf fall may require more frequent cleaning.
