“Water for twenty minutes” sounds precise, but it ignores sprinkler output, soil, slope, wind, roots, and weather. Two zones can run equally long and apply very different amounts. A useful schedule starts by measuring application and checking how deeply moisture moves.
Measure output
Place several straight-sided containers across one zone, including edges. Run it for a known period, measure each depth, and average the results. Large differences reveal poor overlap, a blocked nozzle, pressure trouble, or a tilted head. Correct distribution before adding time or the wettest area will be overwatered while dry edges remain stressed.
Check infiltration
After watering, wait about an hour and push a screwdriver or soil probe into several places. It enters moist soil more easily. Dig a small inspection hole at the lawn edge if needed. The aim is to moisten the active root zone without runoff or prolonged surface saturation.
Sandy soil accepts water quickly but stores less. Clay-rich or compacted soil may need short cycles separated by soak periods. Slopes also benefit from cycle-and-soak programming.
Use grass and weather as feedback
Grass that keeps footprints, folds blades, or develops a dull blue-gray cast may be reaching water stress. Rainfall, cool weather, shade, dormancy, and seasonal growth all change demand. Pause after meaningful rain and reduce irrigation when turf is not actively growing.
Choose the timing
Early morning usually limits wind and evaporation while allowing leaves to dry after sunrise. Avoid frequent light watering that keeps only the surface damp and favors shallow roots. Use the container test to calculate output per hour, divide the needed amount across permitted watering days, and retest after nozzle changes or each new season.
