A dry wheelbarrow axle creates squeaks and makes a loaded barrow harder to steer. Cleaning the axle before applying a small amount of lubricant protects the bearing area and prevents grit from becoming abrasive paste.
Inspect the wheel
Empty the barrow and place it on stable ground. Check the tire, cotter pin, washers, and wheel supports for cracks or looseness before lubricating.
Clean the axle
Brush away soil and old grease with a rag. If the wheel binds, remove it only as the manufacturer permits and keep washers in order. Do not hammer directly on a bearing.
Apply sparingly
Use a lubricant appropriate for the axle and apply a thin film to the contact surfaces. Spin the wheel by hand, wipe away excess, and confirm that it turns without side play.
Store the wheelbarrow under cover and check the tire pressure before heavy use.
