Garden clippers last longer when sap and moisture are removed before storage. A short cleaning routine also exposes a loose pivot, chipped cutting edge, or spring that needs attention before the next pruning job.
Clean off plant residue
Brush away leaves and soil, then wipe the metal surfaces with a damp cloth. For sticky residue, use a small amount of tool-safe cleaner on the cloth and keep it away from wood handles or painted grips. Do not put dirty tools away in a closed box where moisture remains trapped.
Check the moving parts
Open and close the clippers slowly while watching the pivot and spring. Tighten a loose pivot only until the blades move freely. A pivot that binds, a cracked handle, or a spring that will not seat properly is a reason to replace the part or tool.
Protect the metal
Dry the clippers completely and apply a very light film of approved tool oil to the pivot and exposed metal. Wipe away excess so it does not collect grit. Keep oil off plant-contact surfaces when the product label advises against it, and never use a flammable spray near heat.
Store ready for use
Close or lock the clippers and store them in a dry, ventilated place. Keep them separate from wet soil and fertilizer. At the start of the next season, wipe away old oil, inspect the cutting action, and sharpen or replace the tool if it crushes stems instead of making a clean cut.
