Mulch can conserve moisture around a young fruit tree, but a thick pile against the trunk creates a damp environment that encourages decay. The best mulch ring is broad, shallow, and clear at the base.
Clear competing growth
Remove grass and weeds carefully so the tree’s shallow roots are not disturbed. Keep the soil surface level.
Spread a shallow layer
Apply organic mulch evenly several inches away from the trunk. Extend it toward the drip line rather than building a tall mound.
Keep bark exposed
Leave a visible gap around the trunk flare. Do not bury graft unions or low branches.
Inspect after rain
Check whether mulch has washed against the trunk or blocked drainage. Refresh the layer as it settles without repeatedly piling material higher.
