A loose stepping stone can rock underfoot and collect water beneath its edges. Resetting it properly means removing unstable bedding, leveling the base, and checking the finished height against neighboring stones.
Mark and lift
Clear soil and gravel around the stone, then lift it with gloves. Photograph the pattern before removal and check for cracked or sharp pieces.
Repair the base
Remove soft soil and add compactable material in thin layers. Tamp each layer, then finish with a shallow bed of compatible sand or stone dust. Do not rely on a deep loose layer to hide a weak base.
Set and drain
Replace the stone, tap it with a rubber mallet, and confirm it sits flush without rocking. Maintain a slight slope so rain moves away rather than pooling on the walking surface.
Recheck the path after the next storm and replace any washed-out joint material.
