How to Thin Crowded Lettuce Seedlings

Thinning gives lettuce seedlings enough room for leaves and roots to develop. Doing it gradually reduces disturbance and makes it easier to keep the strongest plants.

Wait for true leaves

When seedlings have developed their first true leaves, identify the most vigorous plants and remove weak or crowded neighbors.

Cut instead of pulling

Use small clean scissors at soil level when roots are tightly packed. Pulling can disturb the plants you want to keep.

Set useful spacing

Follow the variety’s spacing guidance and consider whether you will harvest baby leaves or full heads. Water gently after thinning.

Use removed seedlings wisely

Tender thinnings can be washed and eaten if they are clean and untreated, or placed in compost.
