Soft support keeps a pepper plant upright without cutting into its stem. Installing the tie early is easier than correcting a plant that has already bent under fruit or wind.
Choose a flexible tie
Use soft garden tape or a figure-eight tie rather than wire or thin string. Leave space for the stem to thicken.
Place the support
Set a stake far enough from the main stem to avoid the root crown. Push it into firm soil and keep it stable.
Guide without forcing
Bring the stem gently toward the stake and tie it loosely. Add support points higher as the plant grows.
Inspect after weather
Check for rubbing, constriction, and leaning after wind or heavy rain. Adjust before the tie marks the stem.
