A raised bed needs soil that holds enough water for roots, drains excess water, resists severe compaction, and supplies nutrients without becoming a container full of unfinished material. Exact ratios are less important than what each ingredient contributes and how the finished blend behaves after watering.
Start with the bed, not the recipe
Confirm the bed has an open route for drainage. A bottom placed over compacted soil, pavement, or a waterproof liner behaves differently from one open to garden soil. Very tall beds may need a larger volume than expected, and fresh mixtures often settle during the first season.
Avoid filling the productive root zone with construction debris, treated wood scraps, glossy paper, diseased plants, or unknown soil. Large buried logs can settle unevenly and temporarily tie up nitrogen near their surface as they decompose.
Use mineral soil for long-term structure
Screened topsoil or suitable local mineral soil provides lasting particles, buffering, and weight. Quality varies widely. Reject material with a petroleum odor, excessive trash, obvious subsoil clods, or a history of contamination. Heavy clay used alone can compact, while very sandy soil used alone may drain and dry too quickly.
Add mature compost for biology and organic matter
Finished compost should smell earthy, have cooled, and no longer reveal most original ingredients. It improves water handling and supplies nutrients, but a bed filled almost entirely with compost can shrink dramatically, hold excessive salts or nutrients, and behave unpredictably as it continues to decompose.
Ask suppliers about feedstocks and testing. Compost made from manure can be valuable but may contain higher salts or persistent herbicide residues when inputs were not controlled.
Choose aeration materials that suit the climate
Coarse mineral components such as pumice, expanded shale, or suitable grit can maintain pore space. Some lightweight organic components improve initial aeration but break down and require replenishment. Very fast-draining mixes demand more irrigation in hot, dry climates; water retention deserves more weight there.
Blend, water, and observe before planting
Mix components evenly rather than layering fine soil over coarse material. Water the bed thoroughly, then inspect after a day. Water should enter without immediately pooling, and a handful should hold together lightly when squeezed but crumble when disturbed. A ribbon-like sticky mass needs more structure; a blend that will not hold any shape may need more moisture-retentive material.
Test before making major amendments
A laboratory soil test can guide pH and nutrient additions. Do not add lime, sulfur, phosphorus, or broad fertilizer merely because a recipe includes it. Raised beds accumulate salts and nutrients more readily than many gardeners expect.
Top-dress with a modest layer of mature compost between crops and keep the surface mulched with an appropriate material. Maintenance is more effective than replacing the entire mix each year.
